Platelet concentrates and their application

The application of platelet concentrates has significantly increased in recent years mainly due to the increased intensive care and treatment in patients with hematological and oncological diseases. The purpose of this article is to provide a review on the use of platelet concentrates, including appropriate indications and administration based on recommendations and protocols of individual EU countries. There are two main indications of platelet concentrate administration: prophylaxis and treatment. Correct indication of appropriate blood product at the right time is a result of considering the risk of transfusion, risk of patient’s worsening without transfusion and the expected benefit for patient.
