Current options for cardiovascular risk in patient with peripheral arterial disease

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) of lower extremities is often a manifestation of polyvascular disease with a very high cardio-vascular (CV) morbidity and mortality. In clinical practice PAD is underestimated, undertreated, with high nonadherence in patients. The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is complex, therefore treatment should also be complex and targeted in order to influence all risk factors of atherorothrombosis. It is essential to influence the complex atherogenic – cholesterol, inflammatory, cardio-metabolic and thrombotic risk. Recently, new treatment options have emerged for improving both CV and limb prognosis of PAD patients in real clinical practice.
