Risks of acute pulmonary embolism in patients hospitalized in internal medicine department

Approximately 50% of all deaths in Europe are in consequence of cardiovascular diseases. Acute pulmonary embolism is still a serious medical problem in spite of technical progress in diagnostics, as well as the enhancements in prophylactic and therapeutic options. Acute pulmonary embolism is usually caused by thromboembolism from the blood drain of inferior vena cava, less often from the blood drain of superior vena cava, respectively from the right heart. For these reasons, in addition to improving the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism, intensifying preventive strategies at all levels is no less important.
