Microcirculation and diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disease with increasing incidence and prevalence worldwide. Diabetes and its complications significantly reduce the quality of life, shorten the expected life expectancy and have a significant negative socio-economic impact. Chronic complications of diabetes include microangiopathy. Prolonged hyperglycemia causes not only structural but also functional damage to the microcirculation, which results in impaired vasoreactivity. The diagnosis of microvascular disorders could be beneficial for determining the treatment strategy and stratification of each individual.
