A vascular surgeon‘s perspective on treatment of diabetic foot syndrome

Diabetic foot syndrome is the most common non-traumatic cause of limb amputation. Correct diagnosis and early treatment improve the chance of saving the limb. Neuropathy is primarily involved in the formation of the diabetic foot ulcer, while ischemia of the limb accelerates the disease. The treatment of the diabetic foot is complex, it consists of pressure offload, therapy of infection and ischemia, systematic local therapy, compensation of diabetes, education and dispensary of the patient. Systematic podiatric education and care themselves can reduce the number of lower limb amputations. The aim of the article is to provide a comprehensive vascular surgeon‘s perspective on key aspects of diabetic foot treatment and patient care.
