Hemorrhagic and thrombotic complications in hospitalized COVID-19 patients

Introduction: COVID-19 is a viral disease associated mainly with respiratory symptoms, however, the disease is often accompanied by various extrapulmonary symptoms and complications, which include thrombotic and hemorrhagic events. Patients and metods: In this work, we analyze the occurrence of thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications in 991 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in the University Hospital in Martin. Results: Thrombotic complications were more frequent than hemorrhagic, the most frequent complication was pulmonary embolism, which occurred in 59 patients, followed by ischemic stroke, acute myocardial infarction and deep venous thrombosis. Hemorrhagic complications were relatively rare, occurring in only 5 cases (hemorrhagic stroke, spontaneous intramuscular hematoma, enterorrhagia). Conclusion: Thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications of COVID-19 may be associated with a more severe disease course, higher risk of death, and longer duration of hospitalization.
