Compartment syndrome

Compartment syndrome is a serious condition caused by the increased pressure in muscle compartment, mostly occurring after limb injuries. Perfusion and oxygenation of muscle and nerve tissues are decreased and it can lead to its permanent damage if not treated properly. Acute compartment syndrome is an emergency situation and time delay before treatment (fasciotomy) becomes the critical factor in determining outcome. The abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) has received considerable attention just recently and it is associated with high mortality.
