Surgical treatment of inferior vena cava tumours
Inferior vena cava tumours are classified into primary and secondary. Primary tumour is leiomyosarcoma. Leiomyosarcoma of vena cava is extremely rare, but its malignant potential is very high. The most common secondary tumour is renal cell carcinoma with vena cava tumour thrombus. Intracaval tumour thrombus is defined by level of vena cava involvement according Nesbitt classification. Treatment of primary and secondary vena cava tumours is surgical, includes resection of tumour, tumour thrombus removal and vascular reconstruction of vena cava. For reconstruction we prefer large diameter PTFE grafts. Patient outcomes and survival are dictated by malignant neoplasm type, extent of tumour and radical surgical treatment.
