Apixaban has been available for the treatment of venous thromboembolic disease for more than two years
Apixaban – a direct, oral, selective activated factor Xa inhibitor – has been approved since the year 2014 for the treatment of acute venous thrombosis and the so-called low-risk pulmonary embolism (in addition to the registration for the prevention of systemic embolization in non-valvular atrial fibrillation and the prevention of venous thromboembolism in orthopaedics). It is an effective and very safe option for oral monotherapy since the establishment of the diagnosis of thromboembolic disease in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
