Awareness of boys aged 15–19 on the prevention of cancer of the testicles

Testicular cancer in children is one of the rare types of malignant diseases, their incidence is increasing between 15 to 19 years. They are included amongst the most treatable cancers in adults. In the Czech Republic it is annually diagnosed about 400 cases, the incidence of testicular cancer is increasing. The disease is curable, if it is early diagnosis. Regular preventive examinations will reduce disease progression and the nurse at GPCY (general practitioner for children and adolescents) plays an irreplaceable role in this prevention. The aim of the research was to determine the awareness on testicular cancer prevention in boys 15–19. There was used a quantitative research, questioning method and technique of non-standardized questionnaire. The results showed that more than 75 % of boys do not know what includes the cancer of the testicles prevention. Testicular self-examination performed 20.5 % of respondents. After processing the data using a parametric ANOVA test we concluded that the age of respondents have no effect on the knowledge of prevention of cancer testis, nor the implementation of self-examination of the testes. Second aim was to map the role of the nurse in general practitioner’s office for children and adolescents regarding the prevention of testicular cancer at boys. There was used a technique of deep dialogues. The respondents possessed basic information on the subject of testicles cancer and stated that testes examination is conducted in the surgeries. Scientific literature for this subject was recommended rarely. The research suggests very low awareness of the boys on the prevention of cancer of the testicles. Nurses should focus on the rigorous education of boys and parents.
