Use of fluorescence angiography in colorectal surgery

Surgical treatment of disease of colon and rectum faces specific complications, which are inevitable even at the specialized centers. Each complication represents higher cost of treatment and increases diagnostic and therapeutic load of the patient. Dehiscence and anastomotic leak are complications of intestinal anastomosis. They represent serious post-surgical complications of colorectal surgery and significantly influence morbidity and mortality along with economical aspects of therapy. At our department, indocyanine green (ICG)-enhanced fluorescence technique has been used lately as a part of our laparoscopic surgical techniques; it improves surgical view and provides detailed anatomical information during the surgery. Purpose of our article is to provide information about possible use of this technique in colorectal surgery.
