ERAS protocol‘s principles in abdominal surgery
Despite the continuous progress in anesthesiology and the development of new surgical techniques in recent years, postoperative complications remain the main challenge of a demanding surgical procedure. ERAS – Enhanced Recovery After Surgery represents the activity of the interdisciplinary teams, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, rehabilitation workers, and nurses, to reduce the surgical stress response. In practice, we demonstrate the basic principles of this protocol for abdominal surgery, indicating the level of evidence and recommendations for individual points of the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative period of the surgery on EBM (Evidence Based Medicine), which were able to influence the length of hospitalization and subsequent postoperative complications.
