Bleeding in liver surgery

Blood loss and number of applicated blood transfusions are considered one of the major independent predictor factor of postoperative morbidity and mortality in liver resections. In a group of 103 patients, we observed adverse effects of transfusions on the length of hospitalization, postoperative morbidity and early mortality within 30 days of surgery. Our group of patients was sorted on the basis of the new classification of post-hepatectomy haemorrhage, as defined by the International Study Group of Liver Surgery (ISGLS). A trend in our department is reducing intraoperative blood loss and considering stricter administration of blood transfusions after liver resection.
