Effect of treatment of cartilage damage by autologous platelet-rich plasma in an active population of patients under 60 years of age with constitutive tibia varosity

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment of osteoarthritis is a simple mini-invasive treatment that is increasingly used in several fields of medicine, including orthopedics. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical effect of autologous PRP applied in the period from 2012 to 2016 in an economically active group of patients aged up to 60 years with proven damage of cartilage of the inner compartment of the knee joint and tibial varosity. The results of the study showed that the administration of three doses of PRP is a safe and effective method of treating cartilage damage in the studied group of patients. A significant improvement in KOOS score (Knee Injury Score and Osteoarthritis Outcome) was observed three years after PRP compared to the pre-treatment score, controlled for sociodemographic and clinical parameters (gender, age, BMI, previous arthroscopy with menisectomy, degree of cartilage damage as assessed by arthroscopy and X-ray classification).
