Acute cholecystitis of a duplicated gallbladder

Duplication of the gallbladder is a rare congenital anomaly of the hepatobiliary system. Preoperative diagnosis and differentiation of this malformation is important to avoid inadvertent injury to the biliary system. We present a case study of a male patient with duplicated gallbladder, cholecystitis, and Gilbert’s syndrome. The patient experienced epigastric abdominal pain lasting several hours. Initial laboratory tests revealed hyperbilirubinemia, elevated GMT, and CRP levels. Imaging studies, including ultrasound (USG) and computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen, confirmed the presence of a duplicated gallbladder, cholecystolithiasis, and acute cholecystitis. Further magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) showed a slightly enlarged, duplicated gallbladder with a septum and thickened walls, containing gallstones and sediment in the lumen. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed.
