Practical aspects of electroconvulsive therapy in Slovakia
Objective: To review and describe the practice of electroconvulsive therapy in Slovakia. Methods: A 30-item questionnaire according to Belgium nationwide survey on the practice of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was sent to all institutions providing ECT. Results: The major indication for ECT was depression. 16 departments (50 %) used a sine wave device, bitemporal electrode placement was the preferred option in 93,8 % of all departments. Continuation ECT and outpatient ECT were very rarely used. Conclusion: Although ECT is widely available in Slovakia, the practice of ECT is amenable for improvement, guidelines should be implemented and continuing education is needed.
