New possibilities of treatment of ADHD in Slovakia

Hyperkinetic disorder (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD) is the most common disorder of psychic development in the childhood. The course of disorder is chronic, often persists from the childhood into the adolescence. Untreated passes into adulthood in more than 50 %. Has a negative impact in various fields of functioning of the individual. ADHD is associated with antisocial personality disorder, drugs addiction and crime in adulthood. If it is diagnosed in childhood, it is succesfully treated. The treatment by stimulant drugs, mostly methylphenidate, atomoxetine and alpha 2 adrenergic agonists, is the pharmacotherapy with proven efficacy. Adequate treatment of the disorder helps to prevent secondary psychiatric morbidity and social-pathological phenomena.
