Migraine and depression
Migraine is one of the most common neurological diagnosis and represents not only a medical but also a social and socioeconomic problem. The severity and high frequency of migraine attacks increases the risk of migraine chronification, and the incidence of psychiatric comorbidities of migraine, especially depression. Currently, a two-sided mechanism of these two diagnoses is assumed, where migraine increases the likelihood of developing depression and, at the same time, patients with depression have a higher likelihood of developing migraine. The management of these patients is complex and requires the cooperation of several specialties, including a neurologist, a psychiatrist and a psychologist. In this work, we present a view of the occurrence, pathophysiology and treatment options of migraine patients with depression.
