Double depression - clinical aspects and treatment

Concurrent presence of both dysthymia and major depressive disorder in which acute major depressive episodes appear to be superimposed on the underlying chronic depression has been defined as a -double depression-. Untreated or undertreated dysthymia represents a high risk for the development of double depression. The results of current research suggest that the most effective control of episodes of major depressive disorder is successful treatment of dysthymia.
