Inside the creativity in Parkinson´s disease

Creativity as a one of higher brain functions, defined by its novelty and usefulness, may sometimes manifest under pathological circumstances, for instance in Parkinson´s disease. Pathological background of creativity appears as multifactorial however it seems that dopamine and dopamine receptor agonists play an extraordinary role in its origin. This short review article is focused on the pathophysiological aspects, patient´s characteristics and similarities eventually differences between creativity and impulse control disorders. It reports a relatively new and controversial topic with still increasing attention in the field of neuropsychiatry, neurobiology and neuropharmacology.
