Depression, suicidality and sleep disorders in epilepsy
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that is often associated with mental disorders. Depressive disorders are the most frequent psychiatric comorbidity in epilepsy. Epilepsy and depression may share a bidirectional relationship that can be explained by common pathogenic mechanism for both disorders. Psychiatric comorbidity belongs to factors that indicate a poor prognosis of epilepsy. This review brings a summary of a current knowledge of the depression, suicidal ideations and sleep disorders due to epilepsy. The relationships among suicidal ideation, sleep, depression on epilepsy require more research.
