Effect of pharmacotherapy on patient safety – practical outputs – recommendations for medical staff I: antibiotics

An estimated 8 – 12 % of patients admitted to hospital in the EU suffer from adverse events whilst receiving healthcare, for example: medication-related errors. Antimicrobial agents (such as antibiotics) have dramatically reduced the number of deaths from infectious diseases during the 70 years since their introduction. However, through overuse and misuse of these agents, many micro-organisms have become resistant to them. Much of the harm to patients is preventable. Therefore, these recommendations for medical staff were developed.
