On average 500 males and 553 females died from cardio-vascular diseases in Slovakia in 2008 (1). The effects of fats on a human organism are obvious. Fats are inevitable for proper functioning of our body. They are one of the basic nutrients for humans and represent the richest source of energy (1 g of fat stands for 9 kcal = 37.7 kJ of energy). Proper hormone reactions, absorption of some vitamins (a, D, e, K) and an entire range of chemical processes essential to human life would not be possible without fats. (2).
