Adverse effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on the gastrointestinal tract

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are now the most widespread drug group in the treatment of pain, especially pain of inflammatory etiology, and degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system. We meet them in practice in different dosage forms – tablets, capsules, syrups suppositories, patches, gels, creams etc. Their effect is based on reducing of the synthesis of prostanoids, which involves possible risk of harm in their use. As they belong among the most commonly prescribed medications, and many of them (ibuprofen, diclofenac, flurbiprofen, and naproxen) are available without a prescription as OTC (over-the-counter) drugs, an appropriate consideration should be given to them.

Keywords: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, COX, gastrotoxicity.
