Trends in consumption of drugs from the ATC group Ophthalmologicals in the Slovak Republic

The aim of this study was to analyze the consumption of drugs from the ATC group Ophthalmologicals in defined daily doses during the ten years period (from 2008 to 2017) in the Slovak Republic. Sales data of wholesalers, which are legally obliged to provide information to the State Institute for Drug Control were used for the analysis. Data about consumption based on defined daily doses in accordance with the classification of the World Health Organisation were incorporated. The collected data showed a decrease in consumption of drugs from the ATC group Ophthalmologicals from 2008 to 2012 in defined daily doses. The consumption of ophthalmologicals reached 40 023 871 DDD in 2012. However, an increase in consumption from 2013 to 2015 can be seen. The consumption of drugs reached 43 497 867 DDD in 2015. The consumption of ophthalmologicals from 2016 to 2017 decreased at the level of 36 381 643 DDD. The analysis can be supportive for utilization studies and application of systematic arrangements for regulations of drug policy in the Slovak Republic.
