Trends in consumption of drugs based on defined daily doses in the Slovak republic

The aim of this study was to analyze the consumption of drugs in defined daily doses during the ten years period ( from 2007 to 2016 ) in the Slovak Republic.Sales data of wholesalers, which are legally obliged to provide information to the State Institute for Drug Control were used for the analysis.Data about maximum prices of medicinal products and consumption based on defined daily doses in accordance with the classification of the World Health Organisation were incorporated.The collected data showed a significant increase in consumption of drugs from 2007 to 2010 in defined daily doses.In the study, the consumption of drugs in 2010 at the level of 3 797 647 073 DDD can be seen.There was a moderate decrease in consumption based on defined daily doses from 2011 to 2012.The consumption of drugs in 2012 at the level of 3 618 378 002 DDD can be seen.Data showed increase in consumption of drugs from 2013 to 2016.The consumption of drugs based on defined daily doses was in 2016 at the level of 4 321 724 077 DDD.The analysis can be supportive for utilization studies and application of systematic arrangements for regulations of drug policy in the Slovak Republic.
