Strabismus in children

Strabismus affects about 5 – 7 % of the child population. Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes are not properly aligned with each other. A constant unilateral strabismus causing constant suppression is a risk for amblyopia in children. Amblyopia is the unilateral or bilateral decrease of best corrected visual acuity caused by form vision deprivation or abnormal binocular interaction for which there is no obvious ocular or visual pathway pathology. If amblyopia is not treated before the age of about 8 years, the visual impairment usually remains permanent. It is important to diagnose a strabismus and amblyopia as early as possible.
