National recommendation for dental caries prevention in children and adolescents. Stop caries now for cavity free future

The current prevalence of early childhood caries puts Slovakia among countries with its highest prevalence. Determination of and adherence to primary prevention measures ensure its significant drop down. Nutrition with reduced sugar, good oral hygiene, strictly individualized application of fluoride formulations, regular preventive examinations and parental education from the child’s birth are important components of primary caries prevention. This article describes contemporary recommendations for dental caries prevention, explains the importance of the first dental examination and the role of children´s dental booklet from birth.
