Management of children with autism

Autism spectrum disorders represents a heterogenous group of disorders characterized by a dyad of impaired social communication and interaction and the presence of restricted repetitive pattern of behaviour and interests. Research on autism etiology presents a substantial challenge to clinical medicine. Researchers have identified genetic factors that in addition to environmental factors increase the risk of autism phenotype. There is not any biochemical marker known to confirm the diagnosis of autism and moreover there is not any pharmacologic intervention known to cure this condition ad integrum. Management must be individualized according to the child´s specific needs.
