Infants with congenital brain defects, patient case reports
Four infants with severe congenital brain defects were admitted to neonatal intensive care unit in F. D. Roosevelt Teaching Hospital in Banská Bystrica throughout years 2010–2012. Prenatal ultrasonography (USG) and postnatal USG and MRI showed hydranencephaly, holoprosencephaly and schizencephaly. Afterwards were performed ToRCH serology (IgM antibodies Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, CMV, Herpes simplex and Listeria), genetic and organ system screening, in one case was performed also electroencephalography (EEG). VP shunt implantation was indicated in one case. Possibilities of further care and treatment are quite limited, due to severe brain defects. Therefore, VP shunt implantation is seen as a prevention of excessive head growth and macrocephaly.
