INTRAOSEAL ACCESS – PRACTICAL COMPARISON OF TWO TYPES OF PEDIATRIC INTRAOSEAL NEEDLES

The authors present a study that focuses on the use of two intraosseous pediatric infusion systems on an experimental pig model. After an appropriate training, ten paediatricians/neonatologists of all participants in the APLS course were chosen by ballot. They inserted the above mentioned needles twice in two series under standard conditions. None of them had had any practical experience with intraosseous access. The assessment depended on whether the insertion was successful or not. The time was measured as well.A possible incorrect insertion of the intraosseous needle was analysed subsequently. This study confirmed a high success rate of the BIG system in intraosseous insertion (75 – 90 %) with its top in the second series. Both systems showed an improvement of the success rate and noticeable shortening of insertion time in the second series.
