LACTOSE INTOLERANCE IS NOT DUE TO ALLERGY

Food intolerance may be caused by toxic or non-toxic. Toxic reactions may develop due to bacterial infections (staphylococci, salmonella), increased content of biogenic amines or to intoxication by heavy metals. Non-toxic food intolerance reactions may be mediated by immune or non-immune mechanisms. The first of them is exemplified by allergy to cow-milk proteins, while lactose intolerance, an enzymatic defect, develops due to non-immune mechanisms.

Keywords: lactose intolerance, allergy to cow-milk proteins, lactose, lactase.
