Vascular access in children – indication and classification of central venous access
One of the basic principles of quality health care in childhood is to secure a reliable vascular access in indicated cases. It can be an uncomplicated procedure, however in some cases it may become a technically challenging intervention that requires an experienced specialist. Securing vascular access can be especially difficult in neonates, children with comorbidities, syndromes or bone deformities and patients after repeated surgeries or hospitalizations that can be accompanied by multiple attempts of peripheral venous cannulation. In these cases, ultrasonography guidance can be used to significantly increase the success rate and safety of this procedure.
