Therapy and metaphylaxis of non muscle invasive bladder cancer (TaT1, CIS)

Non muscle invasive bladder cancer is a highly heterogeneous group of tumours varying from biologically less aggressive tumours to the highly aggressive anaplastic tumours. Some environmental factors are known to participate in their etiopathogenesis. Even despite an adequate transurethral resection they often recur and progress. Dividing patients into risk groups based on prognostic factors is the key to the optimization of adjuvant chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Radical cystectomy is indicated only in the high risk of disease progression, eventually shortly after the failure of adjuvant BCG therapy. The paper summarizes the latest knowledge on treatment of various types of non muscle invasive bladder tumours in the context of the latest update of EAU guidelines (2010).
