Slovakia and screenenig of colorectal cancer – from beginning to today

Slovakia belongs to the countries with the higest colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality in the world. In late 2002 a g-FOBT oportunistic screeening program was introduced for a popultaion of 1,8 mil people over 50. GP´s offered g-FOBT and postive individuals were sent to colonoscopy. The CRC screenign program was finished in 2007 because of low population acceptance (15 %). From 2008, a centraly organized invitation CRC screening program with i-FOBT was prepared for nationwide introduction in the context of National Cancer Plan. The first step is the introduction of the pilot phase, which was launched 1.1.2019. The second step will be to initiate population based screening program for colorectal cancer, provided that the target population participates in the pilot at least 50%.
