Robot assisted radical prostatectomy
Radical prostatectomy has come a long way of evolution since the first attempts, this has translated into significantly better oncological results and has minimized the harm to the patient. Nowdays we have multiple curable therapeutic options for patients with localized prostate cancer, different spectrum of complications and effect on the quality of life of our patients. We discuss the historical milestones in prostate cancer surgery as well as compare the current surgical techniques. Robotic surgery dominates prostate cancer surgery more and more each year, this is despite comparable oncological and functional outcomes, higher direct cost compared to open surgery, especially in the developed countries. This is most probably due to better comfort for the surgical team, better utilization of hospital staff and reduction of the length of stay in hospital. We can see other cancer surgeries heading the same trajectory.
