View of orthopaedist in diagnostics and therapy of bone tumors

The strategy in tumour treatment of the locomotors apparatus has changed significantly over the past 40 years. Implementation of effective preoperative and postoperative chemotherapy in tumour treatment improved the prognosis of affected patients. The essential prerequisite for effective diagnosis and treatment of patients with bone tumors is an interdisciplinary cooperation. On the treatment of these patients take part paediatricians, general practitioners, orthopedic surgeons, pathologists, oncologists, radiologists and rehabilitation specialists. This improvement is also due to a better understanding of the nature of tumours, enormous advances in diagnostics, new possibilities in surgical treatment and progress in pharmaceutical treatment. The most common malignancy of the bone is osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma and chondrosarcoma respectively. Limb sparing surgery is today indicated as a primary surgery procedure in 80 % of patients.
