Genetic testing for breast cancer predisposition in the clinical setting is focused on monogenic syndromes with the main aim of primary and secondary prevention of malignancies. Many of these genetic defects also open the possibility of personalised (systemic or surgical) treatment of the oncologic patient. This article is focused on genes associated with homologous recombination repair and offers an outline of the most common situations, when genetic counselling for patients with breast cancer is indicated.
