Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma

Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma are rare tumors that originate from the cells of neural crest. Despite a wide variety of clinical features, the main remains the hypertension. Most of pheochromocytoma (FEO) and paraganglioma (PGL) represent sporadic tumors but about 20–30% of these tumors are familial. Besides standard imagining techniques, functional diagnostics plays important role, as well. The definitive treatment is surgical therapy, however in inoperable cases, radionuclide therapeutic methods are used. Systemic chemotherapy has only limited efficacy and, currently, targeted therapeutic approaches are studied. External-beam radiotherapy is used in palliative settings. The most frequent causes of morbidity and mortality are cardiovascular events, such as sudden death, heart attack, heart failure and cerebrovascular events. Early diagnosis is very important not just for prevention of disease dissemination, but for the prevention of possible complications, as well.
