What are the current trends in external beam radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer?
The aim of radiotherapy of localised prostate cancer is long-term biochemical control with minimal late toxicity. Optimal radiotherapy involves prostate irradiation with the adequate total dose and maximum protection of adjacent healthy tissues. Delivering irradiation with high conformity and accuracy, modern technology provides highly effective treatment with improved comfort for a patient. We compiled clinical evidence related to current trends and hot topics in external radiotherapy of prostate cancer. We focused on relative effectiveness of other local treatment options, fractionation, the total dose optimization, pelvic nodes irirradiation, technology optimization, indication of proton beam irradiation and rational administration of androgen deprivation therapy.
