ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS – „FORGOTTEN“ GROUP IN ONCOLOGY?

Cancer in adolescents (15 – 19 years) and young adults (20 – 29 years) appears to be a serious medical, psychological, social and economical problem as well. This group of patients has been languishing in the shadow of the pediatric oncology and out of the interest of adult oncologists. Spectrum of tumors and their biology characteristics are specific for targeted population and are not found in any other age group. The overall incidence of cancer in adolescents and young adults is increasing. Not all young people suffering from cancer have the same chance for cure in current situation, when generally accepted system of referral to specialised cancer center does not exist. different therapeutic approaches have been used by different centers depend on experiences. pediatric and adult oncology are using different therapeutic protocols for the same disease. Analysis of current situation and searching for reserves of optimal and age specific oncology approach for young people with cancer is the main aim of this article.
