Courage pays off – a journey to seizure-free
Epilepsy is one of the most frequent neurological diseases worldwide, which may lead to severely reduced quality of life and disability. It adversely affects a patient’s mental health, often resulting in anxiety, depression or cognitive impairment. Seizures can also result in stigmatization and social exclusion, with detrimental effects on a patient’s confidence. Those with epilepsy report more difficulty in employment and lose a driving license. The main goal of epilepsy treatment is to achieve seizure-free without intolerable adverse effects. It is proven that the complete elimination of seizures improves the quality of life more than the partial reduction of seizures. Cenobamate is an antiseizure medication for the treatment of focal-onset seizures in adults with high seizure freedom rates in randomized controlled trials. In this article we present the case of a patient with epilepsy, by adding cenobamate to the treatment, there was achievement of seizure-free and improved quality of life.
