Syphilis – european recommendations in diagnosis and treatment

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection which, if left untreated, can cause serious and potentially life-threatening problems. Syphilis can be challenging to diagnose. The current gold standard method for diagnosing syphilis is a combination of serologic laboratory nontreponemal tests and treponemal tests. Rapid and accurate detection of syphilis is essential to ensure early treatment. Penicillin is one of the most commonly used antibiotics and is usually effective in treating syphilis. People who are allergic to penicillin are treated with another antibiotic.
