Old drugs in new clothes: possibilities of using nanotechnology in the therapy of psoriasis
Topical therapy is the cornerstone of treatment in the management of psoriasis. It plays an important role as monotherapy in mild to moderate psoriasis and is primarily used as an adjunctive treatment in moderate to severe forms of the disease. Over the past decades, topical psoriasis treatments have shifted from ancient applications such as coal tar to more cosmetically acceptable and effective options containing topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs, and combination agents. With the advent of nanotechnology, the innovation of delivery systems has occurred, and in sophisticated drug delivery regimens, the prospects for effective management of psoriasis using topical approaches appear very promising. In the article, we provide an overview of these approaches with an outlook for introducing these methods into the therapeutic potential of general practitioners and dermatologists.
