Phytophotodermatitis

Phytophotodermatitis is a type of phototoxic dermatoses, where the main role is displayed in skin contact with photosensitizer and exposure to sunlight. Furocoumarins of plants are used as photosensitizers. In contact with the skin and subsequent exposure to ultraviolet radiation in the UVA action spectrum, developes typical erythematous areas with blisters on them, often with bizarre shapes, which can be healed with persistent hyperpigmentation for months to years. Phytophotodermatitis is a clinical diagnosis, which is hinted by a history of being outdoors during a sunny day and with typical clinical manifestations in photoexposed areas of the skin. First aid consists of a fast elimination of plant extracts and juices from the skin and also photoprotection. Further treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms, it is symptomatic and anti-inflammatory. The challenge is the treatment of persistent hyperpigmentation, but prevention remains the most important.
