Current treatment of external genital warts

Human papillomavirus infections belong to the most sexually transmitted diseases in young sexually active population in Europe and the U.S.A. Most of them (90%) are caused by low-risk HPV types 6 and 11. Anogenital warts have a low oncogenic potential. The most common route of infection is by the sexual route; disease can be transmitted also by birth canal, by fingers, by mouth, or by autoinoculation. The risk of genital HPV infection increases with each new sexual contact. Infection has high recurrence rate, difficult eradication and some oncogenic potential. There has not been specific antiviral and completely satisfactory treatment so far, thus, different methods could be used (1).
