Nutrition and metabolic response in critically ill patients
The hypermetabolic state with accelerated proteolysis of skeletal muscle in critically-ill patients leads to immunosuppression, muscle weakness and increased risk of nosocomial infection. Understanding the metabolic response to critcal illness and injury and effects on intermediary metabolism provides guidance for appropriate nutritional support of these patients. The achievement of positive energy balance over the early catabolic flow phase may not be appropriate.
