Nutritional support in critically ill patients: what are the latest data?

According to the recent published data malnutrition in hospitalized patients is still very high. Protein-energy depletion is associated with a higher morbidity, mortality and increases the hospital lenght of stay. Balanced parenteral nutrition is emphasized, with it´s main goal to deliver to critically ill patient an adequate amount of energy, macronutrients (especially proteins) and micronutrients. In stress hyperglycemia and insuline resistance in the healthy tissues may allow sparing glucose for vital organs and injured tissues.
