Perioperative characteristics of adults with congenital heart defects

Medical progress in treatment of congenital heart diseases resulted in increasing number of these patients reaching adulthood. Many of these patients require anesthetic and intensive care for either cardiac or noncardiac surgery. To provide adequate perioperative care risk stratification as well as knowledge of preexisting comorbidities and potential multiorgan complications are necessary. The article discusses risks associated with congenital heart defects as well as respiratory disorders, coagulation, neurologic, psychiatric, renal and endocrine abnormalities.
