Anesthetic management for non-cardiac surgery in patients with grown-up congenital heart disease

Progress in the diagnostic and medical management of congenital heart diseases during childhood in the last decades has resulted in growing population of adult patients with congenital heart diseases (CHD). These patients are at increased risk of developing complications during anesthesia. The article focuses on the perioperative anesthetic management of patients who undergo non-cardiac surgery. The complexity of the defects, along with a variety of non-cardiac surgery, makes it impossible to use single anesthesia technique. The article discusses the impact, risks and possible complications of CHD on the anesthesia management.
